| Info | Chief Justice Nabers was appointed to fill the position of Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court in June 2004 by Governor Bob Riley.
Justice Nabers was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Drayton Nabers and June Porter Nabers. In 1962, he received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and in 1965, a law degree from Yale School of Law. After graduating from Yale, Justice Nabers served as a law clerk for U. S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. In 1967, he became associated with the law firm of Cabaniss, Johnston, Gardner, Dumas, and O'Neal, and became a partner in the firm in 1971. In 1979, Justice Nabers joined Protective Life Corporation, rising to the position of Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. He retired from that position in 2002. He was appointed Finance Director for the State of Alabama by Governor Riley in January 2003, where he remained until his appointment to the Alabama Supreme Court
Justice Nabers is a member of the Alabama Academy of Honor and has served as chairman of Leadership Birmingham, United Way of Central Alabama, the American Council of Life Insurers and Cornerstone Schools of Alabama. He also served as director of Energen Corporation, Alabama National BanCorporation, National Bank of Commerce, and ProAssurance Corporation.
Justice Nabers is a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Mountain Brook, Alabama. He has also served as an Adjunct Instructor at Beeson Divinity School.
Justice Nabers is married to the former Fairfax Virginia Smathers. The Nabers are blessed with three children, Drayton Nabers, III,(Deak); Mary James Nabers Doyle (Mary); and Fairfax Virginia Nabers Blount(Sissy). The Nabers are also the proud grandparents of one granddaughter, and Lord willing in January one grandson.
