Info | Peter Julian was elected as the Member of Parliament for Burnaby-New Westminster on June 28th, 2004 and re-elected on January 23rd, 2006. He currently serves as the New Democratic Party's critic for International Trade, Transport, Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics.
Prior to his election to the House of Commons, Peter served as the Executive Director of the Council of Canadians and later as Executive Director of the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Peter has also had previous experience in Ottawa's political arena having served as the National Policy Coordinator and Assistant and Acting Federal Secretary of the New Democratic Party of Canada.
Peter has a reputation as having strong financial skills in balancing budgets and paying down debt. In 2003 and 2004, under his stewardship, the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing won consecutive Canadian Consumer Choice Awards for Excellence in Business, the only agency to be so honoured.
As a community activist, Peter worked hard to advance the priorities of his community. In particular, Peter has fought tirelessly to maintain the quality of public services such as health care. He co-founded the Save St. Mary's Hospital Community Coalition which fought the closure of an important community hospital, is a founding member of the BC Disability Employment Network and is the co-founder of the Burnaby-New Westminster Council of Canadians.
Peter is a member of four generations of the Julian family who have lived in the Burnaby-New Westminster area where he was born and raised. Peter lives in the 10th Avenue neighbourhood with his wife Micheline, raising a teenager, Stefan. He has been active in the community as a volunteer with Emergency Social Services, Royal City Soccer, East Burnaby Minor Baseball, the United Way and the United Church.
Peter is fluent in English and French and is functional in American Sign Language.
