InfoMary Pynenberg was born in Perth, Ontario, in 1956. The seventh of eight children, she grew up on the farm owned by her parents. Ms. Pynenberg received a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from Carleton University in 1979 and completed her Masters of Planning from the University of Ottawa in 1984. She is a member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and of the Canadian Institute of Planners.

Ms. Pynenberg is passionate about urban planning and development issues such as affordable housing and investment in urban infrastructure. She is working hard to be one the first people with planning and architecture training to advocate for urban issues in the House of Commons.

Before becoming Director of Planning for the City of New Westminster, Ms. Pynenberg gathered valuable experience in Canada, the United States, England and Saudi Arabia. She has also worked for Public Works Canada, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Canadian Pacific Hotels, as well as architecture and design firms.
Ms. Pynenberg was a key advisor in the creation of the Urban Design program at Simon Fraser University, where she has been a guest lecturer. She is also a member of the Advisory Committee for the Langara College Applied Planning program, and is participating in the organization of the upcoming World Planning Congress, to be held in Vancouver in June 2006.

Ms. Pynenberg is a dedicated volunteer in her community. The former President of the New Westminster Rotary Club, she continues to serve on its board. She is also involved with the Massey Theatre, the Hyack Festival Association and The Canadian Club (New Westminster and Fraser Valley). She is on the advisory committees for the Community Futures/Enterprise Facilitation program and the Principle Centred Community Initiative.
Mary and her husband, Jacques Leger, live in the community of New Westminster.
