InfoSome Work History

I have worked as the director of Health and Social Development for the Sechelt Indian Band for over six years. Prior to that I was a child protection social worker in North Vancouver and a consultant on a variety of projects ranging from adoption legislation to crime prevention. During my University career I worked as a short-order cook, dishwasher and cello teacher. I have taught university courses as well as child protection social work to First Nations agency social workers.

Family History

I get my political values and views from my roots. Like many Canadians I come from a mixed heritage. My paternal grandparents were German Jews who, unlike some of their relatives, managed to get out of Germany just before the Second World War. The families of my maternal grandparents, who were elders in the United Church of Canada and members in the CCF, had settled in Nova Scotia hundreds of years ago. My father is a professor of music and my mother is a teacher of the hearing impaired. I have two older brothers, and three younger sisters. I am in a committed relationship with ceramic artist Scott Scobbie.

Interests

I have played the cello for over 25 years with various regional and municipal orchestras and chamber music groups. I have played electric cello with every kind of band imaginable. I write satirical newspaper, the Lower Langdale Tattler, and enjoy kayaking and baseball.

Education

I was raised in Montreal and I am bilingual. I completed my undergraduate degree in Arts at the University of Ottawa and then after working in Yellowknife, received my Master's degree in Criminology from Simon Fraser University.
