InfoSusan Lee and her family immigrated to New York from Hong Kong when she was six years old. Her view of New York has largely been shaped by her experiences growing up in the Lower East Side where she and her brother were just two of the four Asian American students in their elementary school. Her parents are strong believers that education is the pathway for immigrants to achieve the American Dream. Susan graduated Brooklyn Technical High School and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Barnard College, Columbia University. She graduated with a Master in Public Administration from the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University.

Susan worked at an international law firm in Lower Manhattan and was charged with running the 9/11 recovery efforts for the legal assistant department. Susan leveraged resources at the firm and worked on several pro bono matters referred by Human Rights Watch and Safe Horizon. The majority of the cases involved asylum applications of a monk from Tibet, a Muslim fleeing a predominately Christian Liberia, a family escaping the turmoil in Iraq, a LGBTQ individual facing harassment from police in Guatemala, and a man fleeing Congo due to the ongoing civil strife there.

While pursuing her graduate degree, Susan rose through the ranks at AAFE Community Development Fund, first as a graduate intern and was then promoted Program Manager for Development. Her background in International Public Finance played a crucial role in securing grants for AAFE CDF.

Since 2007, Susan has worked with numerous nonprofits in the United States as a freelance grant writer securing multi-year grants for several of them. She was also an Advocacy Fellow at Covenant House International where she strategized with the Senior Vice President of Advocacy on issues and legislations relating to homeless youths and collaborated with partner organizations on advocacy efforts around the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Child Nutrition Act, DREAM Act, International Megan’s Law and Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Deterrence & Victims Support Act.

Susan’s has committed her adult life to the community and helping those in need. She was the founding Board Member of Nomi Network, an organization whose mission is to end modern day slavery through economic empowerment, and served on its Board for almost a decade. Susan was a Board of Trustees at MercyFirst, a human service agency that cares for New York’s children and families. Most recently, Susan founded the Alliance for Community Preservation and Betterment (ACPB), an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life, public safety and neighborhood conditions in and around Manhattan’s historic Chinatown. She is also a Board Member of SDR Park Alliance, a community group with a vision to beautify and enhance public safety within Sara D. Roosevelt Park, through landscaping, capital improvement, and design. Under Susan’s leadership, SDR Park Alliance was awarded $3.3M from New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiatives. The renovation of public space will be a green sanctuary for use by a multicultural and multigenerational neighborhood.

In 2018, Nomi Network awarded Susan the Founder’s Award for Outstanding Service. In 2022, Homecrest Community Services, Inc honored Susan with an award for Outstanding Community Service and Leadership. Susan was named Crain’s New York Business Notable Asian Leaders 2022.

Susan is an avid runner and has completed 15 marathons since 2014. In her spare time, she loves to read, fish and spends time with her husband, Benji.
