Here is his bio from a press release:
SCRANTON, PA - Joe Peters, a former Executive Deputy Attorney General in Pennsylvania, announced today that he has left his position in the Bush White House to form an exploratory committee for the Republican nomination for Attorney General in 2004.
As a cop, prosecutor, and senior official in the Bush Administration, I have dedicated my career to fighting crime and making families safer in their communities, Peters said.
Over the last twenty years, I have developed the experience and leadership skills to serve the people of Pennsylvania as their next Attorney General, and it is with great enthusiasm that I will file the paperwork necessary to begin this campaign.
Peters, who has more than twenty years of law enforcement experience at the federal, state, and local levels, most recently served as the Assistant Deputy Director of State and Local Affairs in the Bush Administrations Office of National Drug Control Policy (Drug Czars Office). In this position, Peters served as the Drug Czars liaison to the White House Office of Homeland Security and Governor Tom Ridge.
Peters, who began his law enforcement career as a uniformed cop in 1978, has held a number of senior positions in Harrisburg, including Executive Deputy Attorney General, where he oversaw the Drug and Organized Crime Division in the Attorney Generals office.
In the late 80s, Peters received national accolades as a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorneys Office in Philadelphia for putting Mob Boss Little Nicky Scarfo, his underboss, and 16 mob soldiers behind bars. The Associated Press called Peters and his team of prosecutors the Modern Day Untouchables, and U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh presented Peters with the U.S. Department of Justices John Marshall Award for Legal Achievement for leading one of the most important mafia family convictions in U.S. history.
Peters, the son of Eugene Peters, the former two-term Republican Mayor of Scranton, earned his law degree from the Dickinson School of Law and his bachelors degree from Kings College in Wilkes-Barre.
