Info | Mr. Ohrenstein was a member of the NYS Senate between 1961 and 1994 and the Senate Minority Leader from 1975 until 1994. His areas of concentration are government relations, including: legislative and regulatory matters on the federal, state and local levels, government contracts and public relations consulting on public policy issues concerning private industry; domestic and international corporate finance, and the financial aspects of the insurance industry.
While he was a member of the New York State Senate, Mr. Ohrenstein represented a major portion of the Westside of Manhattan and the financial district. In that capacity he had extensive involvement in community and real estate developments and participated in the negotiations of major projects including the developments of the New York City Convention Center, Columbus Circle. Since he left the Senate in 1995, Mr. Ohrenstein has appeared for private clients in connection with real estate development projects before local planning boards, the NYC Council, the NYC Planning Commission, the NYC Economic Development Corporation as well as the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and the Empire State Economic Development Corporation.
He has extensive familiarity with the planning for Lower Manhattan. He is a Member of the Advisory Council to the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation for the Financial Services Industry and the Professions. His clients include Edison Properties, which has extensive holdings in Lower Manhattan, and Beyer Blinder Belle, a leading architectural firm. Senator Ohrenstein was the initiator of the legislation that created the New York City Convention Center and the formulator of the financing plan for the Convention Center, the essence of which was the issuance of bonds by the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority.
Mr. Ohrenstein received his bachelor's degree, cum laude, from Brooklyn College in 1948 and his law degree from Columbia University, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, in 1951. He was admitted to practice in 1951 and served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps as a 1st Lieutenant and then a Captain while in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954, and the U.S. Army Reserve from 1954 to 1956. He served as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan from 1954 through 1958.
Mr. Ohrenstein has chaired the New York Delegation to the Democratic National Convention, is Vice-Chairman of the New York Holocaust Museum, a member of the National Governing Council of the American Jewish Committee, a member of the Board of Trustees of the New York Historical Society, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Baruch School of Public Affairs and the City University of New York.
In 1999-2000 he served as a member of the New York City Task Force on the City University of New York by appointment of Mayor Giuliani and in 2001 as a member of the New York City Task Force on the New York City Board of Elections, also appointed by Mayor Giuliani.
He is presently a member of the Advisory Committee on Financial Services and Professional Organizations to the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which is in charge of developing plans for Lower Manhattan in the wake of the September 11, 2001 Trade Center disaster. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Insurance Federation of New York.
