| Info | Glenn Poshard brings 42 years of expertise gained in public service to the SIU Board of Trustees. He is the first three-degree graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale to serve on its Board. He currently serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees; member of the Board's Executive Committee; alternate Board representative to the Board of Directors, Southern Illinois University Foundation; and Board representative to the Board of Directors for the Association of Alumni, Former Students and Friends of Southern Illinois University, Incorporated.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich appointed Poshard, a respected Democrat, to the board in January 2004 to fill a vacancy created by Mark Repking's resignation in 2003. Poshard's term expires in 2005.
In 1999, the White County native founded the Poshard Foundation, which works throughout southern Illinois to benefit children. The Foundation has engaged various individuals and agencies to prevent child abuse in 25 downstate communities and led the charge to build a new $600,000 women's shelter in Cairo that opened in December 2003.
In 1999 he was also appointed SIUC's vice chancellor for administration, a post he held until his retirement in July 2003.
Poshard's knowledge of the University extends back to his days as a student. He worked at SIUC as a student worker and later as a civil servant. At SIUC, he earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education in 1970, a master's degree in educational administration in 1974 and a Ph.D. in administration of higher education in 1984.
During his years in the Illinois Legislature and in the U.S. Congress, he served as a voice for the University system, advocating on behalf of clean coal research programs, tourism and higher education in general.
A former high school teacher, Poshard served as director of the Southern Illinois Educational Service Center in Benton from 1975 to 1982. That year he ran and lost in the Democratic primary for state Senate. Two years later he was appointed to fill the same 59th District Senate seat after his primary opponent, Sen. Gene Johns, died while in office. Three months later he was elected to the seat and was re-elected in 1986.
Poshard made headlines in his earliest days in Congress when he decided he would not accept money from political action committees.
Poshard's reputation for honesty and ethical government became an integral part of the Illinois governor's race in 1998. Poshard faced Republican George Ryan in the general election. In the closing days of the race, Poshard sounded an early warning about an emerging license-for-bribes scandal in the Secretary of State's office. The information came out late in the campaign, and Ryan won the office. Federal attorneys pursued the lead over the course of the next five years. Ryan was indicted in the case in late 2003.
