He resigned from the House on 12/30/1976 so he could take office as a U.S. Senator. [Source: New York Times, 2/28/1973]
Riegle served as a U.S. Senator from Michigan from 1976 to 1995. He was elected to the Senate in 1976. The following month, he was appointed to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of U.S. Senator Philip A. Hart and took office on 12/30/1976. During his term of office, Riegle served as chairman, Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs (One Hundred First through One Hundred Third Congresses).
After the end of his service in the Senate, Riegle joined Shandwick Public Affairs in Washington, D.C., serving as executive committee chair 1995; adjunct professor, Michigan State University School of Business, 1995-.
