| Info | First, I am an immigrant. My parents arrived in the United States as political refugees from communist Russia when I was five years old. They sought a better life in the United States. We settled in Jersey City, and then moved to Newark, where I grew up. To support our family, my father drove a taxi cab in New York City. My mother worked as a secretary in Bloomfield, N.J. I attended Newark’s public schools. The photo above is of my fourth grade class; I am in the front row, second from left.
I became a law professor. I teach at Rutgers Law School, where I train New Jersey’s future lawyers, government leaders, and public servants. Every day in my classroom, I seek to transform the lives of young people. I am running for Congress to bring the same rigor and excellence that my students have come to expect of me in the classroom to representing New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District.
I am also a writer. I am a nationally-recognized scholar of election law and the author of numerous books and articles in the field. My books include Election Law Stories (2016), Democracy by the People: Reforming Campaign Finance in America (2018), and The Best Candidate: Presidential Nomination in Polarized Times (forthcoming 2020).
I attended Columbia University, where Beto O’Rourke was my college classmate. In college, I worked for Senator Bill Bradley (D-NJ) and for legendary Congressman Donald M. Payne Sr. (D-NJ, 10th) in Washington, D.C. I went on to earn my master’s degree from Harvard, a doctorate in politics from Oxford, and my law degree from Stanford.
After graduating, I could have done many things. But, above all, I wanted to become an educator. At every stage of my life’s journey, great teachers opened new doors for me – in Newark, in college, and beyond – and my desire to open the doors of opportunity to future generations inspired me to become a teacher myself. Today, I proudly live, work, and teach in Newark, my hometown, and am active in my community. I also often comment on constitutional and election law issues for TV, on the radio, and in print.
