"None Of The Above"
Gatchell
• The Un-Candidate
• The best public official you never had
In August, 2005 I legally changed my middle name to "None Of The Above". [View the court order]
The State Election Commission is refusing to place my complete name on the Governor and U.S. Senator ballots for the November, 2006 elections. They insist on listing me incorrectly as 'David Gatchell' instead of by my preferred full legal name David "None Of The Above" Gatchell.
This obstruction comes despite the fact that they have seen fit to OK the three-part names Carl "Twofeathers" Whitaker and Walt "Combat" Ward. (Among numerous others across the state.) And, to my knowledge, "Twofeathers" and "Combat" are not even legal names, but rather nicknames.
I'm taking the State to court in an effort to correct this. Their side will be argued by the Attorney General's office.
Why am I being singled out?
• The Tennessee Attorney General position is a political patronage job. It is awarded by a small group of political insiders to a trusted party member. The current AG, Paul Summers, is a Democrat.
• The State Coordinator of Elections is a political patronage job. It is handed out by Jimmy Naifeh, John Wilder and other influential legislators as a plum for party loyalty. The current COE, Brook Thompson, is a Democrat.
• The State Election Commission is made up of five political patronage appointments. Three of them being appointed by the majority party in the legislature, the other two by the minority party. It currently consists of three Democrats and two Republicans.
• Patronage jobs are assigned with a very clear, below the radar understanding that those holding them will first and foremost serve the interests of their party. If they don't? There are plenty of warm bodies available to fill said positions.
The two-party stranglehold in Tennessee is a very lucrative arrangement for a lot of powerful people. They are firmly opposed to challenges or any increase of citizen participation in the political process.
We'll see what happens in the courts. One way or the other, I'll be on both ballots. Either as...
