InfoJoachim-Friedrich Martin Josef Merz

Former Member of the Bundestag for the District of Hochsauerland [October 16, 1994 - 27 September 27, 2009], CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group Chairman (which upholds/referees German Federal Electoral Law limiting CSU operations to Bavaria and CDU operations in 15 other states) [February 29, 2000 - September 22, 2002], and Member of the European Parliament [June 18, 1989 - June 12, 1994].

Upon picking up a law degree from the University of Marburg in 1985, Merz held a brief stint as judge in Saarbrucken, moving on to private practice in 1986, where he established himself as a much sought-after corporate lawyer and multimillionaire in a very short period of time.

A man in a hurry, Merz took a stab at the European Parliament and joined its ranks in 1989. After serving one term, Merz ran for the Bundestag in 1994 for his constituency, the Hochsauerland, and won, holding on until 2009.

Burnishing a reputation for himself during his years in the Bundestag, Merz took a further step forward and was elected Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group, holding on between 2000 to 2002. In that capacity, Merz became the de facto "leader of the opposition" during Chancellor Gerhard Schroder's first term, a pennage which gave him newfound stature and standing.

When Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that she would step down as Leader of the Christian Democratic Party on October 29, 2018, Merz quickly announced his candidacy for the spot. His candidacy has the enthusiastic support of the "Crown Prince" of the CDU, former Chairman of the Party and current President of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble.

Elections for CDU Chairman are planned for December 7-8, 2018 in Hamburg.
