| Info | When James Comer was growing up in rural Monroe County, he always dreamed of becoming a farmer. Like most kids from small towns, Comer is a product of public schools, 4-H and FFA. After graduation from Western Kentucky University at the age of 21, James Comer went to his local community bank, borrowed $120,000 to purchase his first farm, and began his business. Today that business, Comer Family Farms, is one of the largest farming operations in south central Kentucky.
James Comer was called to public service in 2000. He was elected State Representative for the counties of Monroe, Cumberland, Metcalfe and Green. Comer served 11 years as a part-time citizen legislator. He was named the National Republican Freshman Legislator of the Year during his first term as a result of his record breaking legislative accomplishments. During his tenure in the Kentucky General Assembly, Comer was regarded as one of the most conservative, pro-business legislators in Frankfort.
In 2011, James Comer took his passion for agriculture and his credibility as an effective legislator on the road statewide as a candidate for Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture. James Comer was the top vote getter and the only Republican to win any office in 2011.
As Commissioner of Agriculture, James Comer quickly made a national name for himself. Upon taking office, he called for an audit which brought to light considerable waste, fraud and abuse. Comer made the Kentucky Department of Agriculture transparent, efficient and accountable. Comer also implemented many initiatives that resulted in unprecedented growth in Kentucky agriculture.
Comer successfully led a bi-partisan movement to legalize industrial hemp and spearheaded new branding initiatives for our military veterans and Appalachia. Homegrown by Heroes, which highlights Kentucky’s military veteran farmers, is now a trademarked national brand that is being copied across the country. He was also the first constitutional officer to ever return an earmark for a failed project back to the people of Kentucky in the amount of $1.65 million. Comer changed the culture in Frankfort, and will do the same in Washington, D.C.
James Comer is running for Congress for the same reason he ran for Commissioner of Agriculture. Comer believes Washington is as corrupt and unaccountable as the Kentucky Department of Agriculture was prior to his election. Our current Congress is ineffective and completely out of touch with the average American family. Our nation’s federal debt of over $18 trillion is simply unacceptable. We need leaders who care about middle class working families, small business owners and family farmers. James Comer will bring badly needed conservative, common sense leadership to Washington.
James Comer has been married to his wife T.J. for 12 years. Together they are the proud parents of three children ages 11, 8, and 4.
