U.S. Representative (DR-NC) 1823-1826 (resigned on 3/18/1826).

U.S. Senator (D-NC) 1831-1836 (resigned on 11/26/1836 after refusing to honor the request of the NC legislature to uphold the policies of the Jackson administration). Chairman, Committee on Naval Affairs (Twenty-seventh Congress), Committee on Printing (Twenty-seventh Congress).

Mangum received the eleven electoral votes of South Carolina for President of the United States in 1836 on a Whig ticket with John Tyler VA for VP.

U.S. Senator (W-NC) 11/25/1840-1853. Served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth Congresses (1842-1845).

Continued the practice of law until his death in Red Mountain, NC, 9/7/1861; interment in the family burial ground at his home, "Walnut Hall," near Red Mountain, NC.
