Info | Sheriff Lakin began his law enforcement career in 1986 with the Madison County Probation
Department. In 1989, he accepted a position as a deputy sheriff with the Madison County
Sheriff’s Office. In 2005, Sheriff Lakin graduated from the F.B.I. National Academy, Quantico,
VA. He retired as a Major, serving as the department’s Chief Deputy Sheriff, with the Madison
County Sheriff’s Office in 2011. Sheriff Lakin was then hired by the Village of Glen Carbon
where he served as the Chief of Police from 2011—2014. In 2014, Sheriff Lakin was elected as
the Sheriff of Madison County. In addition to serving as a Madison County Child Advocacy
Center board member, Sheriff Lakin is also a board member for the Major Case Squad of Greater
St. Louis and the Southern Illinois Law Enforcement Commission.
During his extensive career as an investigator and law enforcement professional, Sheriff Lakin
continues to support the mission of the Child Advocacy Center. “By providing the proper
intervention and supportive services to children, law enforcement officials are better able to
prosecute abuse cases through a child-sensitive investigative process. This process not only
addresses the need of an interview for prosecution purposes, but also the need of the victim and
family for additional services to aid in their recovery.” –John Lakin
