InfoSAMUEL MARVIN GRIFFIN, Atlanta. Governor. Born Sept. 4, 1907, in Bainbridge, Decatur County, Georgia. Governor Griffin is the son of the late Ernest Howard (Pat) Griffin and the late Mrs. Josie (Butler) Griffin. Graduated from Bainbridge High School, 1925; The Citadel, South Carolina, 1927, AB degree, Political Science and History. Editor, Bainbridge Post Searchlight, 1933 to date, Presbyterian, formerly served on Board of Deacons, Mason; Shirner; American Legion; VFW.; 40 & 8; Moose; Fraternal Order of Eagles; Junior Order United Americann Mechanics; WOW.; ELK; Sigma Delta Chi; Gridiron Club; Sons of American Revolution; Past President of Bainbridge Lions Club and Past President of the Bainbridge and Decatur County Chamber of Commerce. Served as Executive Secretary, State Executive Department 1940. In October 1940, resigned his commission as First Lieutenant in the Reserve Corps and enlisted as a Private in the Georgia National Guard; commissioned Captain and entered active Federal military duty in Feb. 1941. Served in Army approximately four years, most of that time in combat duty in South Pacific. Achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the time of his separtion from service in 1944. Member, House of Rep., Decatur County, 1935-36. Served as Adjutant General, State od Georgia, 1944-47. Lieutenant Governor, January 10, 1949-January 11, 1955; Governor, January 11, 1955-January 13, 1959.

Family details: Married July 11, 1931 in Kernstown, Va., Mary Elizabeth Smith (born Nov. 29, 1905) daughter of Robert S. and Mary Mildred Smith. One son: Samuel Marvin Griffin, Jr. Died, June 13, 1982.
