| Info | Lisa Madigan was born in Chicago. Her parents divorced when she was 2 years old. Shirley Murray married Michael Madigan, now the state's Democratic Party chairman and House speaker, when Lisa was 10, and she took his last name.
Madigan attended Georgetown University and received a bachelor's degree in government in 1988. She taught high school for a year in South Africa upon graduation, then returned to Chicago and took a job as assistant dean for adult/continuing education at Wright Community College. She earned her law degree from Loyola University in 1994 and worked at a Chicago law firm for the next four years. She won her state Senate seat in 1998. Madigan is single.
ISSUES/POLITICAL EXPERIENCE - From the time Madigan first announced her ambitions for political office, she has battled to be seen as her own person-- and not the clone of her powerhouse father. "My father and I come from very different backgrounds, and we have different views on many issues," the Chicago lawyer and community activist said after beating embattled incumbent Sen. Bruce Farley in 1998 to win the Democratic nomination for his seat.
In the Senate, Madigan pushed through a law banning secret compartments in cars, where guns can be hidden. She also sponsored bills seeking tougher penalties for domestic abuse. Unlike her father, Madigan supports abortion rights. She was one of three Senate Democrats to vote against the 1999 bill that allowed dockside gambling on riverboats and greased the skids for a casino in Rosemont-- a proposal now tied up in court.
ELECTORAL HISTORY - Madigan was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1998, defeating incumbent Sen. Bruce Farley in the primary with 66 percent of the vote. She did not have a Republican opponent in the general election. In 2002, she was elected Illinois' first female Attorney General.
