InfoEx-Phoenix Mayor, Attorney & '90/'94 Governor Candidate

Born in Tucson, Arizona, Terry Goddard has built his career combining a commitment to the law with a passion for building successful communities. A graduate of Harvard College (1969) and ASU College of Law (1976), Terry was elected Mayor of Phoenix in 1983 reelected three times.

Terry began working at the Arizona Attorney General's Office in the Criminal and Anti Trust Divisions while still a law student. After admission to the Arizona Bar in 1976, he became an Assistant Attorney General in the Special Prosecutions Section. As a criminal prosecutor, he was part of the team that convicted the president of Lincoln Thrift for fraud.

Terry was named Municipal Leader of the Year by American City and County.
Under Terry's leadership, Phoenix made significant strides in increasing citizen participation, fighting back against crime, improving transportation, revitalizing downtown, providing for quality growth, and setting up nationally recognized programs in arts, culture and historic preservation. In 1988, Terry was elected President of the National League of Cities, becoming the spokesperson for over 16,000 cites, and the same year was named Municipal Leader of the Year by American City and County Magazine.

After his terms as Mayor, Terry worked at the international firm of Bryan Cave. For the past six years, he served as State Director of the Arizona office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development working to promote affordable housing and curb housing discrimination.

Graduation from the Naval Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island, July 1970
Among his civic accomplishments, Terry spearheaded the petition drive to repeal the state sales tax on gasoline. In 1982, he co-chaired Citizens for District Representation that brought council districts to Phoenix. He served as a Director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco from 1995-1999 and on the Board of the State and Local Legal Center from 1987 to 1990. Last year, he completed his third term as a Trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, where he was chair of the Public Policy Committee overseeing the legal activities of the Trust.

In 2000, Terry was elected to represent Maricopa County on the Board of Directors of the Central Arizona Water Conservation District (CAWCD) overseeing Arizona's largest water delivery system. An expert on urban policy, Terry teaches a graduate level course at the College of Architecture at ASU. He serves on the boards of the Arizona Theatre Company, the Benton Foundation, the Cosanti Foundation, the Valley Citizens' League, New Town Community Development Corporation, and Meta Services.

A Navy veteran, Terry Goddard spent three years on active duty and retired with the rank of Commander after 27 years in the Reserves. He is married to Monica Lee. They have a young son..
