Helen was first elected to Newton's Town Council in 2008 and completed her first term in July of 2012 having served as Councilwoman, Deputy Mayor and Mayor. During her tenure, she served as a member of the Planning Board and as a member (Ex-officio) of the Main Street Newton Group where she served as representative for the Town of Newton. She is also the former Chair of the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission and was a member of the Town of Newton's Plan Endorsement Committee. Helen is a strong supporter of the Town's volunteer Fire Department and as the Town Council's liaison to the Fire Department, Helen served as a member of the Fire Department's truck committee organized to design the recently acquired Tower 804 ladder truck.
Professional Service
Currently, Helen is employed as the Director of Development for Jersey Battered Women's Service, Inc. Before going to work for JBWS, she was employed with the March Dimes as Executive Director of the North Jersey Division. As a professional, Helen has led non-profit organizations to raise millions of dollars to help them carry out their missions. Helen is an active member of the Association of Fundraising Professional - New Jersey Chapter.
Prior to her time with the March of Dimes, Helen served as Assistant Vice President and Senior Community Banking Manager for Sovereign Bank.
Volunteer Service and Organizations
A strong supporter of quality education, Helen is a current member and Chair of the Sussex County Community College Foundation Board of Trustees as well as a member of the Catholic Academy of Sussex County Board of Trustees.
Before going to work for the March of Dimes, Helen was an active volunteer for the organization serving in many leadership capacities to help raise awareness and funds for the organization's mission.
Helen has also been very active in her children's schools as a volunteer helping to organize many fundraising events for St. Joseph Regional School and Pope John High School. Helen continues to serve the parish of St. Joseph in Newton as a Eucharistic Minister and former Confirmation Catechist. She is also a member of the Don Bosco Columbiettes. When her children were younger, Helen coached for Newton's youth soccer program.
Awards and Recognition
Helen has received numerous awards and commendations over the years for her work and service, including her very recent nomination by Governor Chis Christie to the New Jersey Advisory Commission on the Status of Women. In 2014, Helen and her husband Greg were the honorees at the St. Joseph Regional School Dinner, Dance and Auction in recognition of their longtime dedication, commitment, and contributions to the school and Catholic education. In 2013, Helen was honored at the Boy Scouts of America, Patriots Path Council, Sussex County Tribute to Women Awards Luncheon. In 2012, she was awarded the New Jersey Herald's "20 Under 40" award that honors 20 exceptional local business leaders under the age of 40.
Family Profile
Helen is the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran. She and her husband Greg, first moved to Newton in the spring of 1998. They have been married for over 20 years and have three children; a son Jordan, and twin daughters, Madelyn and Kathryn.
