InfoA former Member of the National Assembly, Yvon Charbonneau was elected to the House of Commons in 1997 and re-elected in 2000 in the riding of Anjou�Rivi�re-des-Prairies.

He is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Citizenship & Immigration. He has served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and was chair of the caucus committee on the Environment from 1997 to 1999.

He was elected Chair of the Qu�bec Liberal Caucus in February 2003.

He was president of the Canadian group of the Canada-France Parliamentary Association; he chairs the Canada-Lebanon Parliamentary Friendship Group, the Group of Parliamentarians, Friends of Unesco and the Canada-Tunisia Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Before going into politics, Mr. Charbonneau was a professor of French and Humanities, and worked in Tunisia for the ACDI. President for 14 years of the trade union, Centrale de l'enseignement du Qu�bec (1970-78; 1982-1988), he has also worked in the field of the environment as president of the Board of Inquiry on Hazardous Waste, and as vice-president of public relations for the environmental division of the SNC-Lavalin Group. He has also been a public affairs consultant and vice-president of planning and development for the Soci�t� qu�b�coise de d�veloppement de la main-d'oeuvre.

Holder of a master's degree in French literature from Universit� de Montr�al in 1968 and a master's degree in political science from Universit� Laval in 1980, he completed studies toward a doctorate in political science and international relations at Universit� du Qu�bec � Montr�al in 1981.

Born in 1940, Mr. Charbonneau is married to Raja Hammoud, and has four children and four grand-children.
