Info | Maurizio Bevilacqua was first elected to the House of Commons in 1988 in the former riding of York North. He was re-elected in 1990, 1993, 1997, 2000, and in 2004 and 2006 in the new riding of Vaughan. Mr. Bevilacqua has been appointed to several prominent posts over his eighteen years as a Member of Parliament holding pivitol positions as a member of Cabinet and the Opposition. He currently serves as the Opposition Critic, Competitiveness and the New Economy.
Mr. Bevilacqua was named to Cabinet as Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development) on January 15, 2002. He was later appointed Secretary of State (International Financial Institutions) on May 26, 2002.
From 1997 to 2002 Mr. Bevilacqua was Chairman of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance and has also served on the Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
As a member of the Official Opposition (1988-1993), Mr. Bevilacqua was Co-Chair of the Liberal Senate and House of Commons Committee on Youth. He held a number of critic posts, including Employment, Youth and the Disabled. His re-election in 1993 established an all-time record for the most votes received by a candidate in a federal election. Mr. Bevilacqua was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour (1993-1994) and to the Minister of Human Resources Development (1993-1995).
Among his many recognitions Mr. Bevilacqua also received a prestigious award entitled, "Premio Italia nel Mondo," which is given by the Italian Government to individuals of Italian heritage who have served as outstanding role models within the international community. The State of Israel Bonds Canada also honoured Mr. Bevilacqua for his contribution to improving labour-management relations. In recognition of his work towards advancing Canada/US relations, he was presented with the Key to the City of Dallas.
Mr. Bevilacqua was born in Sulmona, Italy on June 1, 1960. He attended Emery Collegiate and York University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Mr. Bevilacqua and his wife Elena have two children: Jean-Paul and Victoria.
