Info | First elected as the Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre (formerly Toronto Centre-Rosedale) in 1993, Bill Graham was re-elected in 1997, 2000 and 2004.
Throughout his time as an MP, Mr. Graham has always pushed for programs and initiatives of importance to the residents of Toronto Centre. He has been a champion in caucus and cabinet for increased funding for social housing, equal rights for gays and lesbians, and an agenda of crime prevention and safety for our cities.
He has earned special recognition from the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada for his exceptional service to the cause of co-operative housing in Toronto and has been named the “Best Local MP” by the readers of NOW Magazine six times.
In January 2002, Mr. Graham was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. As minister, he developed and implemented strategies to promote the Government of Canada’s agenda of global peace and security, prosperity, and better worldwide understanding of the values, culture and capabilities of Canadians.
Following the 2004 election, Mr. Graham was appointed Minister of National Defence. As Defence Minister, he has introduced the new Defence Policy Statement which represents the most significant change to Canada’s military in fifteen years. He has also secured $13 billion in new funds for our military over the next five years – the largest increase in defence spending in a generation. Mr. Graham drew widespread praise for his efforts in spearheading the Canadian Government’s response to the devastating tsunami which hit South-East Asia in December 2004.
Born in Montreal and raised in Vancouver, Mr. Graham practiced law in Toronto before teaching international law at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. Mr. Graham currently lives in the riding with his wife Catherine. They have two children, Katherine and Patrick, and three grandchildren.
