InfoCarolyn Bennett was first elected to the House of Commons for the Toronto riding of St. Paul’s in 1997 and was re-elected in 2000. On December 12, 2003 she was named Minister of State (Public Health) by Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Prior to her election, Ms. Bennett was a family physician in Toronto, a founding partner of Bedford Medical Associates in downtown Toronto, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. Leading the fight to save Toronto's Women’s College Hospital inspired her to stand for public office.

Ms. Bennett is an active representative for St. Paul’s, having hosted more than 75 town halls, neighbourhood check ups, parliamentary clinics, and special events for her constituents since 2000. She and her staff have been able to assist hundreds of constituents in resolving their immigration, CCRA, CPP and EI cases. This ongoing interaction enables Dr. Bennett to identify grassroots solutions and bring them to Ottawa.

A gifted communicator, she is passionate about Canada and about engaging citizens in our democracy. She is a champion for health care, the environment, women in politics and persons with disabilities; and she is recognized as a strong voice for Israel in Ottawa.

Ms. Bennett is the co-author of Kill or Cure? How Canadians Can Remake Their Health Care System. She and her husband, noted Canadian filmmaker Peter O’Brian, have two sons, Jack (23) and Ben (21).
