Info | Dan Harris has been a community and political activist for ten years, gaining more political experience in his 26 years than many much older candidates for office will bring to this election campaign. Dan was the NDP candidate in the 2000 and 2004 federal elections in this riding. In his 10+ years as a member of the NDP Dan has worked in over a dozen campaigns for other candidates, was elected to the Ontario NDP Executive from 2002-2004 and has helped to craft dozens of resolutions to provincial and federal policy conventions. Dan has also done work in the movements for affordable housing, and for social justice and economic reform.
Dan grew up in east end Toronto and his family has lived in this area for more than 75 years. His grandmother grew up on a farm on Midland Avenue and the Harris family were part of the staunch support behind local New Democrats Stephen Lewis, John Harney, Richard Johnston, and Anne Swarbrick when they represented the area for decades. Dan likes to remind voters that Stephen Lewis was around Dan's age when he was first elected.
Dan's first job landed him at Not Your Average Daycare in Scarborough for five years spanning high school and his first year of college. It was here that Dan saw first hand the importance of "early learning" and the need for a National Childcare Program
Dan has been active as a player, coach, member of the executive and sponsor of the Birchmount Baseball League since 1994.
He attended French language schools in Toronto, graduating from École George Étienne Cartier and École Secondaire Mgr-de-Charbonnel. He attended Seneca College in Computer programming and worked at Web Networks from 2001-2004.
Since January 2005 Dan has been back at Seneca College upgrading his computer skills. He is also back working at Web Networks part-time. His interest in Web design lead him to start his own web design company in 2003 and to design and maintain his own election websites.
As well as politics, Dan’s interests include history, computers, web design, games, sports, coaching, rollerblading, movies and reading science fiction novels.
