InfoBrenda Chamberlain was first elected in 1993 as Guelph’s representative in the Federal Government, and was subsequently returned by her constituents to the House of Commons as their Member of Parliament in 1997, 2000, 2004, and 2006. Since becoming elected, Mrs. Chamberlain has served in various capacities in the House. Recognizing her abilities early on, the Prime Minister appointed Mrs. Chamberlain in 1994 Chair of the Liberal Caucus Committee on Economic Development.

She retained this position until 1997, when in the same year Mrs. Chamberlain was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour on July 10, 1997, serving in this capacity until September 1, 1999.

From 1999-2001, Mrs. Chamberlain was elected by her peers to serve as Chair of the powerful Ontario Caucus. On December 12, 2003, Prime Minister Paul Martin appointed Mrs. Chamberlain Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada with Special Emphasis on Public Service Reform and Métis and Non-Status Indians. As part of this responsibility, she was called to Rideau Hall to take the oath of office as a Privy Councillor before the Governor General. Her committee work includes participation on the Standing Committees on Health, Finance, Industry, Human Resources and the Status of Persons with Disabilities, and Government Operations. Mrs. Chamberlain was also Vice-Chair of the Canada-Mexico friendship group.

Effectively reflecting the concerns of her constituents in Parliament, Mrs. Chamberlain has introduced to the House of Commons various Motions, including those dealing with a proposed Seniors Bill of Rights, the underground economy, and the funding of treatment programs for teen smoking. She has also has introduced the following Private Member’s Bills in the House; Bill C-446 An Act to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (mandatory minimums for grow-ops), Bill C-302 An Act to establish a pledge of allegiance to the Canadian Flag, Bill C-344 An Act to amend the Criminal Code (no early parole for those who murder a police officer), and Bill C-405 An Act to amend the Privacy Act (previous conviction for child-related sexual offences). Mrs. Chamberlain has achieved notoriety among her constituents and colleagues for fighting and winning local issues like the proposed Puslinch boundary changes, and national issues like 411 billing, mandatory Touch Tone upgrades, and the government’s proposed NHL funding.

Before entering federal politics, Mrs. Chamberlain was elected at the municipal level, serving the residents of Guelph-Wellington as a Trustee on the Wellington County Board of Education from 1985-1993, with the distinction of being elected Chair from 1987-1990. Further activities in the community include becoming the Executive Director of the Wellington County Literacy Council, Executive Director of the Guelph-Wellington Career Education Council, and Co-Chair of the Family and Children’s Services Fundraising, and Honourary Chair of the Guelph–Wellington MS Supercities Walk.

Previous to the aforementioned activities, Mrs. Chamberlain worked as an Administrative Assistant in a family-owned business (1984-1987).

Mrs. Chamberlain is married and the proud mother of three.
