| Info | A nationally known academic, author and editor, John Godfrey was first elected to Parliament in 1993.
Prior to being apointed as Canada's first Minister of State (Infrastructure and Communities) on July 20th 2004, Mr. Godfrey served as Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Paul Martin with special emphasis on Cities to lead efforts to secure the New Deal for Cities and Communities.
Mr. Godfrey had previously held a variety of senior parliamentary positions, including being Chair of both the Heritage Committee and the Industry Committee. He has also been Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation, and to the Minister of Canadian Heritage. Mr. Godfrey also served as Chair of the Liberal Caucus Social Policy Committee for four years.
Prior to serving in Canada's Parliament, Mr. Godfrey enjoyed a distinguished career in the academic world and journalism. He first gained a national profile during his tenure, from 1987 to 1991, as Editor of The Financial Post.
He has also been the Vice-President of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, one of Canada's leading research institutes specializing in social, economic and scientific issues of national importance.
Mr. Godfrey began his working career at Halifax's Dalhousie University, where he was a professor of history for 17 years, ten of which he served as President of King's College.
A widely-published writer, Mr. Godfrey co-authored The Canada We Want - Competing Visions for the New Millennium in 1999.
