Info | Secretary General of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany since February 26, 2018 and Minister President of the Saarland from August 10, 2011 to February 28, 2018.
Upon graduating the University of Saarbrucken with a masters degree in political science in 1990, Kramp-Karrenbauer (aka, AKK) served under Peter Müller, the Chief of the Saarland CDU, as his policy officer.
An early protégé of Müller's, AKK moved with him when he became Chief Minister of the Saarland, serving as his minister for internal affairs between 2000 and 2004, among other capacities, until Müller resigned to become a Constitution Court judge in 2011.
AKK succeeded Müller in 2011 as Chief of the Saarland CDU and, with his blessing and support, was also selected Chief Minister of Saarland that same year.
Noticed and held with high regard by Chancellor Merkel, AKK was tapped by her to become General Secretary of the national CDU on February 26, 2018.
AKK proclaimed her candidacy for CDU Party leader upon Chancellor Merkel's announcement on October 29, 2018 that she was retiring. A vote for the leadership position will be held on December 7-8, 2018 in Hamburg.
