Born and raised in Swan Lake, Manitoba which is 160 kms south west of Winnipeg, Ron moved to Ontario when he was 22, to join the Ontario Provincial Police. Ron Swain ran as a Canadian Alliance candidate - Algoma Manitoulin in the 2000 federal election. He came in second with 29 per cent of the vote.
