InfoLabour left-winger and ally of Michael Foot who was a well-regarded (if low profile) member of the Callaghan cabinet. Booth lost his Barrow constituency - normally a Labour stronghold - in 1983 largely because his outspoken anti-nuclear views had become increasingly unpopular in a town dependent on the manufacturing of nuclear submarines.

Member of Parliament for Barrow-in-Furness 1966-83, Minister of State at the Department of Employment 1974-76, Secretary of State for Employment 1976-79, Labour transport spokesman 1979-83. Treasurer of the Labour Party 1984.
