Info | Yvon Godin was first elected Member of Parliament for Acadie—Bathurst on June 2, 1997. He was re-elected on November 27, 2000, June 28, 2004 and January 23, 2006. Mr. Godin was born in 1955 in Saint-Sauveur, New Brunswick. He was the youngest of 12 children. He has three daughters and one grandson and presently reside in Bathurst with his partner Lyna.
In 1975, Yvon Godin went to work underground at the Brunswick Mine in Bathurst. In 1979, he was elected treasurer of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) local for the mine, and in 1981, he was elected as secretary to finance. He was also elected president from 1982 to 1988. Given his experience, he became in 1988 the union representative for 2,500 USWA members. He also represented workers on the provincial minimum wage committee for seven years. In addition, Mr. Godin was a member of the federal committee on training for miners and fish plant workers. From 1984 to 1987, he was the president of District des Services Locaux of Allardville.
Mr. Godin is currently the NDP Critic for Employment Insurance, Official Languages, Intergovernmental Affairs and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). He has been the NDP Whip since 2000. He is a member of the Standing Committee on Official Languages and the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs.
On March 27, 2003, Mr. Godin was awarded the title of Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Pléiade, de l'Ordre de la Francophonie et du Dialogue des cultures for his contribution to the Francophonie in Canada.
