InfoDr. Gary Ellis has dedicated his career to protection of society’s most vulnerable people; particularly kids. Throughout Gary’s decorated career in international law enforcement and education, he has developed a long record of bringing together police, community leadership, and all levels of government to protect children who are at greatest risk.

Gary is running to be Scarborough–Guildwood’s next MPP because having served 30 years in senior levels of law enforcement, he recognizes how important it is for police officers to have the right kind of partners in government.

Gary spent most of his career in law enforcement as a member of the Toronto Police Services, retiring with the rank of Superintendant. Throughout his career, Gary served as Commander of the Toronto Homicide Squad, Sex Crimes Unit, Drug Squad, and Field Command (42 Division). Gary also served as the operational commander of the RCMP Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit focused on organized crime and counter-terrorism and spent a year working with the FBI as part of their Leadership Development Program.

One of Gary’s biggest priorities throughout his career has been the protection of children at risk of exploitation. As head of Toronto’s Sex Crimes Unit he helped spearhead an international strategy to protect children who were being targeted over the internet. Today in private life, Gary continues to put his experience in protecting children to work as a board member of the Kids Internet Safety Alliance (KINSA).

Gary holds a PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Toronto and currently serves as the Program Head of Justice Studies at the University of Guelph-Humber. Gary also owns his own consulting business focusing on strategic corporate solutions, crisis communications training, stakeholder relations, and executive education. He has three published works and has written numerous training materials used by law enforcement and educational professionals to this day.

A past board member of Youth Assisting Youth and the New Dimensions in Community Living (Mental Health), Gary is an active Deacon in his church and has served as a Sunday School Teacher for 25 years. He also led a community group of volunteers who fixed hundreds of tombstones that had been vandalized in the local community. Gary is a recipient of the City of Toronto Volunteer award as well as being awarded a special achievement award from Toronto City Council for his work in the community.

Gary and his wife Cathy have been married for over 32 years, and are proud parents of their 24 year old son Tyler. Having come from humble roots himself, Gary is proudest when he hears from formerly troubled youth who have become productive members of the community. He considers himself blessed to have had success in his life, and considers it his responsibility to leave a legacy of good in more young people, so that they too have the opportunity to make a difference in their community.
