Info | Republican Mike Sodrel is challenging incumbent Democrat Congressman Baron Hill to a re-match in IN-09 in this year's general election. Hill narrowly won the race in 2002 with 51.2 percent to Sodrel's 46.1 percent. Sodrel's strong name I.D. from the 2002 congressional election, his widespread support and proven fundraising prowess make him a formidable candidate to unseat Hill. The state has been trending more Republican in recent years. President Bush won this district with 56 percent of the vote in 2000.
A New Albany native, Sodrel runs a transportation company founded by his great grandfather in 1867. Sodrel transformed the company from two employees twenty five years ago to a 500-employee busing and delivery giant known throughout the United States. As a business owner, Sodrel appreciates the kind of hard work, determination and character it takes to see a small business succeed. He also knows firsthand how tax relief helps small businesses grow and how business success translates into job creation for the community.
Sodrel's Indiana roots run deep. His family has lived in Southern Indiana since immigrating to the United States from England. Sodrel's great grandfather settled in Perry County in 1859. The family later moved to Clarksville, in time to witness the 1937 flood, and eventually settled in New Albany.
Sodrel received 77 percent of his contributions from inside the district and is very involved with the community. He is a director of the Geurin Home for abused children and also serves on the advisory committee of the Jeffersonville Boys and Girls Club. He is a former member of the National Federation of Independent Businesses, the Indiana and U.S. Chambers of Commerce and was Chairman of the Southern Indiana Chamber of Commerce.
Sodrel is a pro-life advocate and lifetime NRA member. He also served in the Indiana Army National Guard in its Armored, Infantry and Mechanized Infantry units for seven years.
Sodrel lives in New Albany with his wife, Marquita (Keta), and has two children as well as four grandchildren. The Sodrels are members of Southeast Christian Church.
