John Harold Merrill was born on November 12, 1963. The son of former Cleburne County Probate Judge Horace S. Merrill and retired teacher Mary T. Merrill, John was raised in Heflin (pop. 3,000; Cleburne County, pop. 14,100), Alabama and is a graduate of Cleburne County Elementary School and Cleburne County High School. John was also active in the Boy Scouts of America and is an Eagle Scout from Heflin Troop 206.
John graduated from The University of Alabama where he was active in the Student Government Association (SGA), having served as a student senator, as Vice-President, and as President (1986-87). John was the last independent (non-Greek) candidate to be elected and only the seventh in the 89-year history of the SGA. While at the University, John was very involved in Residential Life, served on nine University Standing Committees, was in the Anderson Society, was awarded the William P. Bloom Scholarship, and served two Congressional Internships in Washington, D.C. (Congressman Bill Nichols - 1983 and U. S. Senator Howell Heflin - 1984).
Since graduating from the University, John has served as a National Account Executive and Manager at Randall Publishing Company (1988-90), as the Assistant Director of the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority (1990-93), and as the Director of Business Development for the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama (1993-94). Since December of 1994, he has served as the Director of Community Relations and Community Education for the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education. In his present capacity, John serves as the system�s spokesperson and coordinates the after-school programs in eighteen of the system�s schools.
Some of John's community activities include being a graduate of Leadership Tuscaloosa (89-90), founder of Forerunners (1992-93), and serving as President of the following: Leadership Tuscaloosa Alumni Association, United Cerebral Palsy of West Alabama, Druid Civitan Club (two terms), Tuscaloosa City School's Vocational Advisory Council, Greater Tuscaloosa Youth for Christ, and the West Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross.
John has also been active with the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, United Way of West Alabama, Northport Citizenship League, Hillcrest High School Athletic Boosters Club, Boy Scouts of America - Black Warrior Council, Girl Scouts of America - Tombigbee Council, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Theater Tuscaloosa, YMCA, Taylorville Community Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, March of Dimes, West Alabama Chapter of the Public Relations Council of Alabama, PRIDE, U. S. 82 Corridor Project, West Alabama Festival with Franklin Graham, National Day of Prayer, Tuscaloosa Tip-Off Club, Challenge 21 - Strategic Planning committee and Cultural Relations committee, Mercedes-Benz Relocation Team, the University of Alabama�s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the National Rifle Association and others.
John is an elected member of the Tuscaloosa County Democratic Executive Committee and the Alabama State Democratic Executive Committee. In 1998, 2000, and 2001 he served as a political analyst for Tuscaloosa�s WJRD TV 49 and Channel 7 election coverage.
Professionally, he is the Past President of the Alabama Community Education Association (ACEA), and the Alabama School Communicators Association (ASCA).
John and his family attend Calvary Baptist Church where he serves as a Deacon, Church Parliamentarian, Youth Sunday School Teacher, Royal Ambassador Counselor and Program Director, and he serves as a member of the Sanctuary Choir and men�s ensemble, One Spirit. John has also been on the Walk to Emmaus (Walk 68) and has worked as a team member on several Emmaus and Chrysalis teams.
John and his wife Cindy, an elementary school teacher, live in the Taylorville community of Tuscaloosa County with their two children, Pelham Brooks (12) and Alexandra Grace (9).
