| Info | An Allentown native and lifelong resident of the city’s East Side, Mary Ellen Koval’s decision to run for City Controller is a natural progression in a career dedicated to helping her city and its people. Mary Ellen has witnessed firsthand the changing tides of the Queen City’s fortunes and she cares passionately about Allentown’s future.
A graduate of William Allen High School, Mary Ellen served the Amalgamated Clothing and Textiles Workers AFL-CIO, CLC from 1969 to 1985. In that capacity, she supervised a staff of 14 employees and administered an office serving a six-state region and 44,000 members. She was accountable for staffing and budgetary matters and honed her skills in contract management and compliance.
From 1985 to 1999, Mary Ellen served as Executive Director of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation for the Lehigh Valley region. Her tenure with the March of Times was marked by a substantial increase in fund raising; proliferation in the number of volunteers; and the professionalization and diversification of the local Executive Broad.
Since 1999, Mary Ellen has held various senior level positions with the City of Allentown, first as Special Projects Manager and currently as Purchasing Agent, a position she has held for almost three years. Her experience has given her significant insights and perspectives on the workings of municipal government. Her skill and experience with the preparation and review of annual budgets, auditing payments and expenses, and monitoring contract performance and management have made uniquely qualified her for continuing her public service commitment as Allentown’s fiscal watchdog in the role of City Controller.
