Info | RUSSELL, David Abel, a Representative from New York; born in Petersburg, N.Y., in 1780; completed preparatory studies; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Salem, N.Y.; appointed justice of the peace in 1807; admitted to practice as counselor in 1809; district attorney for the northern judicial district of New York in 1813; member of the state assembly in 1816, 1830, and 1833; elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth, and Twenty-sixth Congresses (March 4, 1835-March 3, 1841); chairman, Committee on Claims (Twenty-sixth Congress); died in Salem, Washington County, N.Y., November 24, 1861; interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
