Info | UPHAM, Charles Wentworth, (cousin of George Baxter Upham and Jabez Upham), a Representative from Massachusetts; born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, May 4, 1802; served as an apothecary’s apprentice; worked on a farm in Nova Scotia, immigrated to the United States in 1816 and settled in Boston, Mass.; was graduated from the theological department of Harvard University in 1821; was ordained to the ministry and officiated in Salem, Mass., 1824-1844; member of the State house of representatives 1840-1849; unsuccessful Whig candidate for election to the Thirty-second Congress; mayor of Salem, Mass., in 1852; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1853; elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1855); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1854 to the Thirty-fourth Congress; member of the State senate in 1857 and 1858, serving as president; again a member of the State house of representatives in 1859 and 1860; died in Salem, Mass., on June 15, 1875; interment in Harmony Grove Cemetery.
