Info | FERRIS, Charles Goadsby, a Representative from New York; born at “The Homestead,” Throgs Neck, the Bronx, N.Y., about 1796; received a limited education; studied law; was admitted to the bar and practiced in New York City; member of the board of aldermen in 1832 and 1833; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Dudley Selden and served from December 1, 1834, to March 3, 1835; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843); was largely instrumental in securing an appropriation through Congress to build the first telegraph line; died in New York City June 4, 1848.
