Info | WILLIAMS, John, a Representative from New York; born in Utica, N.Y., January 7, 1807; spent his youth and completed preparatory studies in Sackets Harbor, N.Y.; moved to Rochester, N.Y., in 1824 and engaged in mercantile pursuits and the manufacture of flour; member of the board of aldermen in 1844; mayor of Rochester in 1853; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855-March 3, 1857); again engaged in the milling business 1858-1870; was major general of the Seventh Division of the National Guard at the time of his death; excise commissioner and manager of the house of refuge in 1870; city treasurer from 1871 until his death; died in Rochester, N.Y., March 26, 1875; interment in Mount Hope Cemetery.
