Info | Born in Ruth, Nevada, Mrs. Bentley began her twenty four year career with The Baltimore Sun upon graduation from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. While at The Sun, Mrs. Bentley created the most respected maritime section in the nation, breaking important local and national stories through dogged determination and a personal style that made her famous from boardrooms to the docks.
In 1950, Mrs. Bentley branched out into television with the series, "The Port That Built a City," and later "The Port That Built a State." Acting as producer, director, editor, writer and interviewer, while still editing and reporting for The Sun, Mrs. Bentley's focus on the Port of Baltimore was credited as the genesis of an increased public and governmental awareness of its far reaching economic impact.
In 1969, President Richard M. Nixon appointed Mrs. Bentley Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission making her the highest ranking woman in the federal government, the first woman to serve in a key governmental position in the maritime field, and the first woman to be appointed by a President to head a federal regulatory agency. In 1975, Mrs. Bentley left the Federal Maritime Commission and went into private business as an international business consultant and president of HDB International, Inc.
In 1984, Mrs. Bentley was elected to the first of five consecutive terms in the United States House of Representatives, becoming only the 103rd women in U.S. history to be elected to the House. She served on several committees including: Appropriations; Budget; Public Works and Transportation; and Merchant Marine and Fisheries, as well as the Steel, Art, Northeast, Human Rights, and Trade and Tourism Caucuses. While in Congress, Mrs. Bentley built a reputation as a relentless fighter for economic opportunity and a formidable mediator between labor and management. As an expert on maritime issues she advocated fair trade practices and a strong national defense. And, as a Republican elected five times in a district which was 2 1/2 to 1 Democrat, she built an incredible record of effective constituent service.
Since leaving the Congress in 1995, Mrs. Bentley has served as President of Helen Bentley & Associates, Inc., specializing in international trade, economic development, and business management and marketing consulting. Working in the field of international consulting and economic development, her advice and counsel has been sought by the Maryland Port Authority and several other prominent public and private trade organizations.
unsuccessful candidate for election to the Ninety-seventh in 1980 and Ninety-eighth Congresses in 1982; elected as a Republican to the Ninety-ninth and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1985-January 3, 1995); was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Fourth Congress in 1994, but was an unsuccessful candidate for nomination for Governor of Maryland; unsuccessful candidate for election to the One Hundred Eighth Congress in 2002.
