Info | Russell James Edwards is a Georgia native, born and raised in Fayette County. Growing up, he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and leader in the church's youth group. Throughout his childhood, Russell was involved in a variety of community service activities, the most notable being his extensive work with Atlanta’s Trinity United Methodist Church to provide food and services to the homeless.
Russell is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Asheville 2004. While in college, he also found time to manage a successful local architectural salvage business.
After college, Russell moved to Washington, D.C., where he taught in D.C. Public Schools. He also coached basketball at the school, leading his team to an undefeated district championship. This teaching experience made him recognize the incredible challenges facing today’s educational system as well as the children and parents it serves. It also gave him a firsthand opportunity to work alongside important national leaders. Russell worked with Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton as her Chair of Outreach for the D.C. Congressional Art Competition Committee and was instrumental in expanding the program’s reach and participation.
Russell Edwards also fought for clean air and water while he lived in Washington. He launched a campaign that distributed over 5,000 energy-saving light bulbs to residents of the community. He also organized a Youth Summit that brought together community members to explore ways to reduce energy consumption and lessen America’s dependence on foreign oil.
During his time in the nation’s capital, however, Russell never forgot his Georgia home. He made the hard decision to leave his teaching position in Washington and return to Georgia to help make his home a better place.
Russell is a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law.
In his leisure time, Russell enjoys playing old bluegrass tunes on his guitar.
