Info | Dennis Sullivan, 61, is a retired Somerville teacher. He has resided in the borough for 32 years and won election to council four times, first in 1994. He has also run unsuccessfully for mayor in 2003 and for county freeholder in 2001 and 2006.
“I have the energy and enthusiasm needed at this critical time in Somerville’s history. My 15 years on the Finance Committee are invaluable as Somerville faces the fiscal pressure of dealing with mandated costs and a limited tax base. Difficult decisions await as the Borough Council struggles to keep Somerville clean, safe and affordable.”
He says, “Taxes matter most in Somerville. Over one-third of all properties in town are tax-exempt. With our devastating loss of state aid, the budget is stretched very thin. Smart redevelopment that leads to new ratables will stabilize taxes and allow needed improvements to continue.” The council must “balance the need for quality services with respect for the taxpayers’ ability to pay.”
Sullivan says, “People know me as a teacher (35 years on the job in Somerville), friend and neighbor as well as councilman. They have trusted my judgment to make difficult decisions on their behalf for 15 years. I value that trust and will work even harder for continued success.”
