Info | Tom Horner is a native Minnesotan. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Tom is the son of Jack and Cel Horner. His father, Jack Horner, was one of Minnesota’s first radio and television personalities. His parents instilled in Tom and his five brothers the values of integrity and service – values Tom has upheld throughout his life.
Tom is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas. After working in New York City, he returned to Minnesota as a reporter and editor for the Suburban Sun Newspapers. He eventually became managing editor, supervising the editorial content and production of 16 community newspapers.
In 1978, Tom joined Dave Durenberger’s staff as press secretary during Durenberger’s first campaign for the U.S. Senate, then joined the newly elected senator in Washington. Tom served as press secretary and chief of staff to Durenberger until 1985.
On his first day in Washington, Tom met his future wife, Libby Shelton, who was on the staff of Sen. Hubert Humphrey and, after his death, Sen. Muriel Humphrey. Tom and Libby married in 1980 and have three children, Amanda, Kevin, and Christopher.
After returning to Minnesota, Tom and former state legislator John Himle launched the public affairs firm of Himle Horner Inc. in 1989. Himle Horner has earned a reputation for creating the strategies and coalitions that promoted solutions for Minnesota’s future in economic development, health care, transportation, the environment, agriculture and other critical issues.
While other candidates talk about bringing Minnesotans together to create solutions, Tom Horner has more than 30 years of experience in getting it done.
To carry on his family tradition of service, Tom has been an active leader in organizations working in the arts, social services, community service, the environment and other areas. He currently serves on the boards of Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, the Minnesota Commission on National and Community Service (also known as ServeMinnesota), Citizens League, the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communications' Premack Board, and Minnesota Land Trust.
Tom also is an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas, teaching master's courses in corporate communications and public affairs. And, while his kids were growing up, spent many hours coaching youth athletics.
For the past 25 years, Minnesotans have heard Tom’s thoughtful and even-handed analysis of public policy and politics on Minnesota Public Radio and in other media.
