Info | Lawrence E. Richter, Jr. is currently in his 39th year as a member of the S.C. Bar. Respected for his legal abilities, Richter’s law firm focuses on complex civil litigation, and has represented victims in high profile controversies such as the U.S. Air Charlotte Crash which had 57 victims. Richter was co-lead counsel in the suit against the video poker industry, perhaps the largest and most complex civil proceeding in the history of South Carolina jurisprudence. He has represented more victims of child sexual abuse than anyone in the history of our state. He passionately continues to fight on behalf of victims today.
A native of Charleston, Richter graduated from Bishop England High School, received his A.B. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He resides in Mt. Pleasant.
Richter has broad experience having served in the executive, judicial and legislative branches of South Carolina government. He served as the chairman of the Medical Examiner Commission for five years and is now serving his second full term on the Aviation Authority. He served as a Municipal Judge for five years, a Family Court Judge for two years and as a Circuit Court Judge for six years. He also served as an Acting Associate Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. After completing his terms as a Circuit Court Judge, Richter was elected to the South Carolina State Senate in 1992.
Richter is very active in the South Carolina Bar where he is a Life Fellow. He is also involved in his community and has held positions on the Board of Directors for the Charleston Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Charleston Civic Ballet, the Foster Grandparents Program, the Young Charleston Theater Company, and the Florence Crittenden Home. Currently, Richter serves on the Board of Directors of the Heart and Vascular Institute at the Medical University of South Carolina and on the Charleston County Aviation Authority.
During his years as a Circuit Judge, Richter presided over several death penalty cases, sentencing five men to execution. He also decided the case which created the law of feticide in South Carolina.
During his service in the South Carolina Senate, Richter was the leader of a broad based undertaking of criminal justice and prison reform. He has received numerous awards from victim advocacy groups.
He has been awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s most prestigious honor.
Richter has been married for forty-one years and has three daughters and two grandchildren.
