Info | O. Gene Bicknell became one of the first Pizza Hut franchisees when he opened a Pittsburg restaurant in 1962. He aggressively expanded, mostly in the southeastern part of the country.
Bicknell's National Pizza Co., or NPC, went public in 1984. The capital infusion led to further expansion, and the company is now the largest Pizza Hut franchisee in the world, with 835 Pizza Hut restaurants in 27 states.
Challenge: In this economy, NPC management might have difficulty getting banks to lend money for their proposed leveraged buyout, according to analysts who cover the company. However, Pizza Hut is a stable business that is not technology dependent and has a steady cash flow, so if banks do lend for a buyout, this will be the type of company they will look to, said Scott Keller, an analyst with DealAnalytics.com in New York.
Opportunity: The company's updated locations continue to drive favorable sales gains. A reimaging program is a long-term project that will take several years to complete.
