InfoPersonal Background

Arie Friedman was raised and now lives in Highland Park, Illinois. Arie attended the Sager Solomon Schechter Elementary School and Highland Park High School (class of '83). For college, Arie attended the University of Chicago where he graduated with a B.A. in Biology. Arie is a member of North Suburban Beth El Synagogue. He is married to Michelle Rosenthal (HPHS Class of '87), has five children, and owns a yellow Labrador Retriever named Obidiah. In his rare moments of spare time, Arie attempts to stay physically fit and has,on occasion, had his photographic works displayed in local galleries.
Military

Seven days after graduating from the UofC in 1987, Arie joined the U.S. Navy and entered Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS) in Pensacola, Florida. Upon completion of AOCS in September, 1987, Arie was commissioned an Ensign and began his flight training in Corpus Christi, Texas, and Pensacola, Florida. After completing flight training in March, 1989, Arie was designated an Unrestricted Naval Aviator (one fully qualified to fly both fixed wing and rotary aircraft).

Immediately after graduating from flight training, Arie transferred to NAS North Island, California, where he joined the embryonic HSL-49 "Scorpions" as one of its initial cadre of SH-60B Seahawk helicopter pilots. During the next three years, HSL-49 grew from a handful of sailors in a borrowed office to a fully equipped and combat helicopter squadron. As part of his experiences at HSL-49, Arie:

* •Deployed as a member of the commisioning crew of USS Chosin (CG 65)
* •Deployed to Operation Desert Storm aboard USS Vandegrift (FFG 48)
* •Attended Submarine Warfare Advanced Tactical School
* •Conducted 406 shipboard landings - 183 at night
* •Was the first American pilot to ever land on a vessel of the Indian Navy
* •Became the squadron's second-ever home-grown Helicopter Aircraft Commander

After a three years at HSL-49, Arie transferred back to Pensacola, where he spent the rest of his active duty career as an Instructor Pilot in tactics and advanced helicopter operations. When Arie left active duty in 1994, he transferred to the Naval Reserve Medical Corps and was attached to Naval Reserve Fleet Hospital Great Lakes. Arie transferred to the Retired Reserves in 2005.
Medicine

Dr Friedman graduated at the top of his class from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1998. He next underwent pediatric residency training at The University of Chicago Children's Hospital. Having built their practice from scratch, Dr. Friedman and his partners now own a thriving medical practice with locations in Lincolnshire and Gurnee. Dr. Friedman is currently on staff at all but one of the District's hospitals.
