InfoAkm Rahman, fondly known among friends and family as Shahjahan, was born in Sylhet, Bangladesh, on December 12, 1957. From his childhood to-date he has shown a strong compassion for humanity and provided community services to the needy. He has also shown organizational leadership quality and community development skills through his long history of supporting the needs of disadvantaged people.

In 1971, the Liberation War for Bangladesh began. Rahman, who had just turned thirteen, felt a strong compelling need to provide an outreach for the countless war victims. The nationwide famine that followed the birth of Bangladesh, provided him with the opportunity to lead in order to extend the love and support to the disadvantaged people.

In 1975, at the age of eighteen, he created a youth organization called ‘Mousumee Sports and Social Welfare Association’. This group of young school students helped the community by providing after school programs, boy scouts, sports, food programs for the poor, and support for flood victims.

In 1977, Akm Rahman graduated from Chittagong University. After graduating, he started teaching the needy youth and started an adult education program that changed the lives of many disadvantaged people.

In 1981, at the age of 26, he joined his parents in Michigan, never once forgetting about the suffering and poverty he had left in Bangladesh.

In 1984, Akm Rahman got married to his wonderful wife Roohi. Soon after, he returned to Bangladesh to continue his effort to help the disadvantaged. During his visit, he began to think about ways in which he could improve the quality of life in his birth city, Sylhet. In an effort to tackle this challenge, he organized a group of volunteers to start the house numbering system (address) in the city of Sylhet, Bangladesh. This initiated a lasting impression on the local government to continue to change the lifestyle for the betterment of everyone in Sylhet.

From 1982-1985, Akm Rahman attended Empire State College in New York and worked for Business Computing International and Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry. Rahman participated in the New York Auxiliary Police Training program to help reduce the crime rate, and participated New York Cosmos soccer team try-out.

From 1986-2009, Akm Rahman attended Wayne County Community College and Michigan State University in an attempt to keep skill-set current. He worked at the Westin Hotel, Marriott Hotel, and for the State of Michigan Civil Service. Rahman also managed his own businesses including The Summit Specialties on the 72ndfloor of the Renaissance Center in Detroit.

As the United States unemployment rate soared in 2002, Rahman was able to relate it to the poverty rate in Bangladesh. He worked as a state of Michigan job developer and called a group of activists in the Coleman Young Community Center inDetroit to discuss the needs of the outreach programs in the community.

By 2003, Rahman founded ‘Hope Center Inc’ (www.hopecenter.org) to help the outreach effort. He started a suite of programs with the help of Mr. Tom Cervenek, director of the People’s Community Services in Hamtramck, including English as a Second Language, Bangla as a Second Language, Citizenship, Basic Computing, Job Workshops, and Food Drives for senior citizens. Every month, Hope Center distributes free food to hundreds of people of all color who live in poverty within Hamtramck.

Akm Rahman strongly believes th-e elected officials should be helping people fight crimes, and work to bring more business without being blind-sighted by their self-interest.

By October 2007, Rahman made the decision to run for Michigan State Representative on behalf of the people of 5th district. Being a resident of Michigan, he has developed a genuine passion and wants to help the 5th district, develop into a strong, flourishing, diverse community. God willing, we hope that the citizens of this district will vote for a change and Akm Rahman will be elected as the next State Representative of 5th district.
