Courtney Cole for Missouri House 121st District

Born and raised in Missouri, Courtney grew up in the city of Excelsior Springs. Her parents, Kevin and Sonya Morgan, owned a printing company, Morgan Printing, for a number of years and currently own a small business web site design company, Morgansites.com. Morgansites.com is a family business which incorporates both Courtney and her younger brother, Joe, who has his own business in Kansas City -- Joe’s Datacenter.

Courtney attended the Excelsior Springs School District from pre-school through high school and was very active in the community. She was Vice-President of the Student Government Association, editor of her school newspaper, heavily involved in the theater department, President of the Business Club D.E.C.A., and Secretary of Students Against Drunk Driving. Courtney spent her summers volunteering for a local non-profit organization, The Good Samaritan Center, in the food pantry and thrift store. Her time there allowed her to witness first hand the struggles of many families in tough economic times. This has made her sensitive to others needs throughout her whole life.

Courtney attended Cottey College for her Associate’s Degree in Theater and Journalism. Courtney served as Secretary of her class, President of the on-campus sorority, and became a member of the honor sorority Delta Psi Omega. It was here she met her husband, Jason. She transferred to the University of Saint Mary on scholarship where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education and Theater. It was also at this University that Courtney had the privilege of graduating with Honors in the field of Theater, recognized in the Who’s Who program for universities, and was given the first Student of the Month award for the university, due to fulfilling the mission of the college.

After college Courtney and Jason moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where Jason worked on his doctoral degree at University of Kansas. Courtney began teaching at one of the four middle schools, South Junior High, in Lawrence. Courtney taught theater, speech, and English, as well as coached girl’s tennis, directed the school plays, and worked in the school’s special education room as a para-professional. She then taught at Leavenworth High School where she taught Theater, speech and debate. After having Mackenzie, she returned back to South Junior High School to be closer to her family.

When Jason finished his coursework at KU, he was offered a position at UCM as an assistant professor of the broadcast classes. They eagerly bought a house and have lived in Warrensburg ever since.

Courtney has continued to be actively involved in her community any way she can. She has been a member of the Business Professional Women’s organization for the past six years, previously serving as President of the Excelsior Springs chapter. She has also served as the Young Careerist Chair for the State Board the past two years and won the State competition for the program in 2006. She representated Missouri nationally in Dallas in 2006 and is still a member of the organization today.

Courtney is also a member of the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO) which promotes educational opportunities for women through scholarships, educational loans and programs.

Courtney and her family attend church at the First United Methodist in downtown Warrensburg. Courtney has had a lifetime relationship with Christ and devoted much of her time in high school to the church’s youth group. Throughout the summers she attended conferences in Kansas City and summer camps in Kansas learning more about how to incorporate Christ’s message into her life and helping others. After coming to Warrensburg Courtney became a member of Mothers of Pre-School Students (M.O.P.S.) which incorporates the message of Christianity for support in being a mom.

Courtney has always been close to her grandparents growing up. Ramon and Joyce Mercer were owners of the Mercer Farm Implement, which maintained tractors out of Mosby and Excelsior Springs, Mo., for a number of years. Her paternal grandparents are Joseph and Shirley Morgan. Joseph is a World War II veteran and owned the Excelsior Springs Daily Standard and Town and Country Leader newspaper for decades.

Courtney’s in-laws, Charles and Judy Cole, live on a farm in Sheldon, Mo. There they have a variety of livestock. Charles is a retired postmaster and Judy is a retired public school teacher.
