InfoVILMA MARTINEZ joined Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP as a partner in 1982. She is a distinguished attorney, civil rights advocate, and a leader in public service. Her practice focuses on providing advice to companies enhancing their equal employment opportunity policies and building diversity and inclusion initiatives into their business plans.

Ms. Martinez offers key leaders of corporations and universities the mature, critical, and reasoned judgment of a trusted confidante with whom to discuss the most sensitive matters affecting their organizations. For the past two years, she has Chaired Wal-Mart’s Employment Practices Advisory Panel which advises the Company’s top Management and Board on policies and strategies that will further Wal-Mart’s objective of creating more diversity and inclusion in the Company’s business plans and employment practices. Recently, Ms. Martinez has served as a Monitor in a number of consent decrees negotiated by the EEOC.

Ms. Martinez has developed a thorough understanding of corporate practices while serving on the Boards of Directors for major corporations including Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (Member, Audit and Corporate Governance Committees); Fluor Corporation (Member, Audit and Corporate Governance Committees); and Bank of the West (Chair, Trust Committee). Previous corporate board memberships include: Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. (1983-2008), Shell Oil Company (1997-2005) and Sanwa Bank California (1990-2002).

During the past 25 years, Ms. Martinez has advised and defended numerous companies facing challenges to their employment practices in state and federal court litigation. Throughout her career, Ms. Martinez honed her understanding of employment issues in the areas of diversity, discrimination, EEO compliance and Title VII compliance. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Martinez served as President and General Counsel of the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) for nine years. Prior to her work for MALDEF, she was a litigation associate at New York's Cahill, Gordon & Reindel, specializing in employment discrimination matters. She started her career as a staff attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in 1967, where she worked on a number of early Title VII cases.

Ms. Martinez’ experience has been enriched through continued public service on numerous non-profit boards. She served as Chairman of The Board of Regents of The University of California from 1984-1986, and was a Regent from 1976-1990. Ms. Martinez chaired the Pacific Council's Study Group on Mexico and served on the advisory boards of Columbia Law School and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California. She was appointed to President Clinton’s Advisory Committee on Trade Policy & Negotiations from 1994-1996.
