Ray was born at home in Rural New Berlin to Warren and Pearl Taylor Page. He grew up in Loami and started his schooling in a one room school house where he was taught by his father. He graduated from New Berlin High School in 1939.
Ray and Kathryn Kincaid graduated from western Illinois University on June 3, 1943 and were married on June 6, 1943. While at WIU he excelled in baseball and basketball and was selected to the WIU Sports Hall of Fame. In later years he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from WIU. Ray earned his Masters of Education Degree from the University of Illinois and has received Honorary Doctorate degrees from Merrimac College, Eureka College and McKendree College.
Ray enlisted as a cadet in the Army Air Corps after graduation. He earned his wings at Altus Air Force Base in February 1945.
After the war, Ray returned to Illinois and began his career as a high school teacher and coach. Early positions were in Auburn, Chebanse and Williamsville. In 1955 he was hired as american history teacher and coach at Springfield High School. His basketball teams went to the state tournament for six consecutive years, winning the state title in 1959. He is a member of the Illinois Coaches Hall of Fame and the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame.
In 1962, Ray was elected State Superindendent of Public Instruction and served two four year terms.
Ray was very active in the Republican Party, serving as secretary of the Illinois delegation to the Republican National Convention of 1964 in San Francisco and of 1968 in Miami. Ray was also the Illinois downstate campaign manager for Richard Nixon's successful for the presidency in 1968.
After moving to Arizona in 1973, Ray was consultant for Pima Community College and served as the executive director of the Tucson Trade Bureau for two years. Ray who had been a Mason for 55 years, is a life member of Divernon Lodge # 1158 A.F. & A. M.
After retirement, Ray and Kathryn loved to travel, with trips to Alaska, California and many cross country drives back to Illinois to visit family and friends. Most trips would include at least one visit to see his beloved Chicago Cubs. Ray loved golf and played until his body told him it was time to be a spectator.
Because of his outgoing personality and loyalty to friends, Ray will be missed by many people. Ray and Kathryn have maintained friendships through the years with classmates, fellow cadets, co-workers, former students, former employees and almost anyone who has ever had contact with them.
