InfoAdrian Smith, a native of Scottsbluff, is a fourth-generation resident of Nebraska’s Third Congressional District.

Adrian has had a lifelong passion for government and public service. As a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Adrian got his start as a staff intern in the Nebraska Governor’s Office and later, as a legislative page in the Nebraska Unicameral. It was here that Adrian began to develop an interest in the process and policy decisions.

Upon graduating from college, Adrian moved back to Gering, where he worked as Project Manager in Staff Development for Educational Service Unit No. 13. In 1994, Adrian began serving his hometown as a member of the Gering City Council. In addition, Adrian began taking an active role within several community organizations, including the Western Nebraska Regional Airport Operations Board, Vision 2020 Land Use Task Force, Scotts Bluff County Visitors Advisory Committee, and the Twin Cities Development Board of Directors.

Adrian began lending his time and support to many local organizations to preserve and celebrate the rich history and heritage of Western Nebraska, including the Riverside Zoological Society, North Platte Valley Historical Society, Wyo-Braska Museum of Natural History, and the Farm and Ranch Museum. He also began to take a more active role in Republican politics, serving as an alternate to the Republican National Convention delegation in 1996.

After four years of service on the city council, Adrian sought and won the District 48 seat in the Nebraska Unicameral, just six short years after his first state capitol experience as a legislative page. He quickly earned a reputation as a champion of conservative values and ideals. He has consistently voted against tax increases, voted for Nebraskans to keep their right to gun ownership, and has a strong pro-life record. Adrian served as Vice Chair of the Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and as Chairman of the Four State Legislative Conference in 2001.

In 2002, Adrian was unopposed in his bid for re-election. During his time in the legislature, Adrian became even more active in national politics, serving on the American Council of Young Political Leaders delegations to India in 2000 and Tanzania in 2004. He served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 2000 and 2004.

Adrian continues to reside in Gering in a house built in the early 1900s that he has restored. He works as a real estate agent for Buyers Realty of Scottsbluff, and owns a small business. He continues to be active in several local organizations, including the Cavalry Memorial Evangelical Free Church and the Scottsbluff County Board of Realtors. The 2006 session of the Nebraska Unicameral will be Adrian’s last as a member of the legislature as he pursues the opportunity to serve Nebraska in the United States Congress.
